Alterning the memo line on a personal check?

I wrote "payment in full" on the memo line of a check I gave an electrician. We disputed the amount he charged and sent a check for what we thought was fair. He crossed out the memo, cashed the check, and is now pursuing us for the balance. Is that legal?|||Yes. You cannot force a settlement on him. He would have to agree to the lesser price.

By the way, it will work in your favor that you did pay him what you considered you owed him. Now you just have to prove you don't owe the disputed amount in court.
